Sask. couple on honeymoon in Mexico gets unexpected extension due to flight cancellations

A married couple from Saskatchewan celebrating their honeymoon in Mexico got an unexpected extension due to multiple flight cancellations.

Cody and Chelsea Williamson from Moose Jaw spent a week in Cancun, Mexico.

When it was time to head home, they got to the airport and were told their WestJet flight had been cancelled due to unscheduled maintenance.

For the next two days, they returned to the airport only to receive the same update.

“WestJet had a statement, people were going to get home okay Saturday, day three no matter what,” Cody Williamson said.

“We said we are getting home for sure. Everything looked good, but it wasn’t.”

The WestJet pilot came down and shared the news with the passengers that the plane was not yet fixed.

Those waiting to go home were told two smaller planes would pick them up and take them home.

Just before the Williamsons were about to board the plane, they were stopped and told there was an issue with their boarding pass.

They waited and were not let on to the plane before it left. Their luggage had already been taken on, leaving them with just their essentials like money and passports.

The Williamsons stayed another night before flying back to Canada with another airline. Now they are waiting for answers from WestJet.

“In my line of work when we mess up, we have to pay for things,” said Williamson.

“I understand that the plane was broken and that we couldn’t fly. But to hold people up for four days is crazy.”

The married couple are parents to three young children and say they are fortunate to have an understanding place of work.

They are hoping for some sort of compensation for their trip home.

CTV News reached out to WestJet about the incident but did not receive an answer before deadline.
