SARM convention begins in Regina with fuel prices a key concern

Saskatchewan’s rural leaders gathered in Regina for the annual SARM convention where rural issues like fuel costs and government policy are up for discussion.

Delegates from across the province are in Regina this week for the annual convention of the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM).

The convention began Tuesday with opening remarks and continues Wednesday with an address from both Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe and NDP Leader Carla Beck.

The premier is also expected to take part in the event’s “Bear Pit” session, where members of the provincial cabinet answer questions directly from SARM delegates.

Several key issues affecting rural Saskatchewan are expected to be discussed during the gathering, including rising fuel costs that municipal leaders say are putting pressure on farmers and rural communities.

Bill Huber, president of SARM, said gasoline prices have already climbed significantly in recent weeks.

“We’ve seen the price of gasoline at the pumps rise 20 to 30 cents a litre already in the last couple of weeks,” Huber said. “It’s certainly a concern, and fuel prices on our farms today are huge because big farm equipment requires a lot of fuel to power it.”

Huber added the higher costs are also affecting the movement of agricultural commodities and exports.

Diesel prices have also risen sharply in Saskatchewan, approaching $1.90 per litre in Regina and around $1.76 in Saskatoon.

The SARM convention runs until March 12, with rural leaders debating resolutions and raising concerns about issues facing municipalities across the province.
