The Saskatchewan Roughriders were one of four CFL teams penalized for exceeding the league’s salary cap in 2024.

The Green and White were fined $40,121, the amount they exceeded the salary cap by.

Teams exceeding the cap by less than $100,000 are fined the amount they were over. Violations up to $300,000 are met with a double fine along with the forfeiture of the team’s next available first round draft pick.

The B.C. Lions were above the 2024 cap by $347,889 and will lose their first and second round picks in the upcoming CFL Draft on April 29, along with receiving a fine of $643,667.

That will result in the Riders’ first round pick in 2025 moving up from 5th to 4th overall.

The league-mandated salary cap in 2024 was $5.525 million.

Along with the Riders and Lions, the Toronto Argonauts exceeded the cap by $87,103 while the Ottawa Redblacks were over the cap by $22,914. Both teams will be fined those amounts but not lose any draft picks.

The Riders begin the 2025 CFL regular season with a Thursday night home game against Ottawa on June 5.
