Moose Jaw Humane Society launches campaign for new shelter facility

The Moose Jaw Humane society is moving again and is asking the community for help with its next location. Mick Favel has more.

The Moose Jaw Humane Society launched their fundraising campaign for a new shelter, with a goal of $5 million to complete construction.

The Humane Society’s current building has been in use for 40 years and is nearing its lifespan.

Dana Haukaas, the executive director of the Moose Jaw Humane Society, said much effort has been used to keep the building going.

“It is time for us to move forward with a new building so that we can create more space and keep the animals healthier and happier while they stay with us waiting for their forever home,” she said.

The building is currently home to cats, dogs and a guinea pig.

However, adoptions are not as frequent as they once were, as pets are now staying with the Humane Society for longer periods of time.

“It is important that they stretch, to feel comfortable, and show that true personality to the potential adopter who comes to meet them,” Haukaas said.

At one time, dogs were a more popular choice for adopters. Now, cats get taken home more often with dogs staying longer.

For the first time in nearly 15 years, they have the least number of cats.

“It used to be that everyone wanted a dog, and our dog turnover was super quick. Now we are seeing even young puppies stay with us for longer periods of time,” Haukaas explained.

The hopeful move-in date for the new facility is September 2028.

So far, $2 million has been raised for the new facility.

A new fundraising sign was donated by Minuteman Press and the stand was donated by Strictly Fences.
