Moe remains middle of the pack in latest premier approval ratings

WATCH: According to a recent Angus Reid poll, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe’s approval is saying steady at 49 per cent.

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe’s approval remains unchanged at 49 per cent – despite ongoing criticism of the province’s wildfire response.

According to the latest polls from the Angus Reid Institute, Moe’s approval is unchanged from March but down three points from December of last year.

A difficult start to the province’s wildfire season has seen Saskatchewan’s ombudsman accuse the government of being too slow in providing food and shelter to evacuees.

Moe has spoken publicly, saying the government is moving as quickly as possible – in addition to rolling out more financial supports for evacuees.

Additionally, farmers in the province are still facing 100 per cent import tariffs on canola from China.

Moe has called the canola tariffs the most significant trade action affecting the province’s economy to date. He has urged the federal government to address it quickly. However, no progress has been made.

Moe’s all-time low in approval was 43 per cent during the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic in September of 2021, while all-time highs were recorded in June 2019 and June 2020.

To the east, Manitoba’s Wab Kinew enjoys the highest approval rating of all provincial leaders at 68 per cent. Manitoba faces similar challenges to Saskatchewan on the wildfire front – with around 18,000 residents evacuated there.

To the west, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith enjoyed a five per cent bump – polling at 51 per cent.

The report outlined several actions responsible for the rise in approval, such as Smith’s visit to Mar-a-Lago amid tariff fears, lowering the bar for a provincial referendum and pushing the federal government on its promises to make Canada an energy superpower.

The extra visibility on the national scene has helped to distract from provincial controversies, according to the report.

The poll was conducted between March 13-16 and included a randomized sample of 4,009 members of the Angus Reid Forum.

In Saskatchewan, 367 people took part in the poll, which carries a provincial margin of error of +/- five per cent.
