Man charged in connection to Regina apartment, mailbox break-ins

Regina police say a 36-year-old man is facing nine charges in connection to multiple apartment and subsequent thefts from mailboxes that occurred of the past three months.

The suspect, a 36-year-old from Lake Alma, Sask. is facing four counts of break and enter and commit theft, four counts of possession of break and enter tools and theft under $5,000, a Regina police news release said. He was identified through video surveillance and other investigations.

Police say the first incident happened on Nov. 8 at an apartment building on the 2900 block of Avonhurst Drive. “Witnesses reported hearing noises in the mailbox area and when they entered the space to investigate, they came across a male suspect attempting to use a screwdriver to break into the mailboxes. The suspect immediately fled the scene,” the release said.

Regina police say on Jan. 14 a male suspect walked up to the front of a residence on the 800 block of Robinson Street and took all the mail from the mailbox.

Two days later police say mailboxes at an apartment on the 2000 block of 9th Avenue North were pried open and several pieces of mail were stolen.

The final incident occurred on Jan. 21. Regina police say once again the apartment on Avonhurst Drive was targeted and several mailboxes were opened by a screwdriver. Police said the suspect was confronted by a witness and fled the scene.

The 36-year-old suspect made his first court appearance on Jan. 27.
