A new sub-committee created by Hockey Regina will be focused on growing the organization’s female membership over the long-term.
The Female Hockey Growth and Development Committee will be made up five members, including a coach from the University of Regina Cougar’s hockey team.
The organization said it will be engaging with players, coaches, other organizations and the broader community to grow the game of female hockey.
“The intent is really to bring together a lot of different perspectives. Engage our membership and understand their needs and wants,” Hockey Regina Executive Director Amanda Hungle explained.
Hockey Regina currently has 490 female players in its programming – split over four age groups and two skill levels.
“We’re seeing the younger age groups have more attendees and that’s flowing right through all the age groups, so exciting times,” explained Garnett Volk, a director at Hockey Regina.
Current players are enthusiastic about the possibilities of growth in their leagues.
“I like playing hockey with a bunch of girls who have a similar interest in the sport. I just like playing on a team with all girls too,” said Leia Promhouse, a U11 Regina Rebels player.
The committee was recently formalized and will meet again in February.
