‘A tremendous honour’: Michelle Good one of two Saskatchewanians to receive Order of Canada

Saskatchewan's Wayne Brownlee and Michelle Good were among the 80 new individuals appointed to the Order of Canada.

Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, has appointed 80 new individuals to the Order of Canada, and that includes Saskatoon’s Wayne Brownlee, and Maple Creek’s Michelle Good.

Created in 1967, the Order of Canada is one of the highest honours an individual can receive in the country, with under 8,300 people having been appointed in its history.

Wayne Brownlee is recognized for his leadership in Canadian business and philanthropy. As CFO of PotashCorp, he guided its evolution into Nutrien, a global agricultural leader. He has also made lasting contributions to education, heritage and health care through his generous support and dedicated service to charitable and community organizations.

Michelle Good is a member of the Red Pheasant Cree Nation who is esteemed for her work as an activist, lawyer and storyteller. A survivor of the Sixties Scoop and the intergenerational trauma of the residential school system, she has confronted laws that continue to hurt Indigenous communities and advocates reconciliation, truth and respect.

“To say I was surprised would be a massive understatement,” she said. “I was really, really surprised. It’s a tremendous honor and that really hits home when you realize that there are fewer than 8,500 people who have been honoured by admittance into the Order of Canada since its inception.”

“It’s a tremendous honour and it’s one that just inspires soul searching in terms of how I can continue to do positive change making work.”

Good added that she is very excited to eventually head to Rideau Hall in the nation’s capital to receive her award from the Governor General.
