Mounties are investigating a frightening incident in which a man tried to grab an 11-year-old girl near a Nanaimo park in broad daylight over the weekend.

The girl was walking on a trail that connects Sheffield Place to Camcrest Park on Sunday at around 3:30 p.m. when she heard someone approach her from behind.

She turned and saw an older man and as he passed by her, he tried to grab her.

The girl managed to evade him and took off running for a nearby home. She didn’t suffer injuries in the incident, according to police.

She reported the encounter to police and officers swarmed the area with a canine unit, but couldn’t track down the man.

He’s described as white, between 45-60 years old, wearing dark clothing and was last seen turning left onto Goldfinch Crescent.

Police are praising the girl for removing herself from the situation and reporting it to an adult immediately.

Mounties said they’d be following up with the girl and her parents Monday, and an investigation is ongoing.
