West Shore RCMP says a pedestrian was taken to hospital after being struck by a vehicle in View Royal.

The pedestrian, whose age and sex are unknown, was struck in the 130-block of Island Highway at 5:50 p.m.

Witnesses said the pedestrian was seen leaving a bus and was jaywalking across the road when struck by the vehicle.

"The weather reduced visibility on the roadway and the vehicle attempted to stop but was unable to do so in time," West Shore RCMP said in a statement.

The vehicle involved is believed to be an SUV, and police say the driver is cooperating with them.

RCMP say the person struck was in and out of consciousness while being rushed to hospital, but was still breathing.

On Thursday, it was confirmed the pedestrian was in the intensive care unit at Victoria General Hospital with stable, non-life threatening injuries.

Traffic was shut down in both directions on Craigflower Road near Admirals Road for several hours as a result.
