An online fundraiser for the family of a little girl left in a coma after she was struck in a Saanich crosswalk last week has more than doubled its stated goal.

The GoFundMe campaign identifies Leila Bui, 11, as the girl struck by an SUV on the morning of Dec. 20, as she crossed an intersection in front of her family home on the way to school.

She was rushed to hospital in serious condition and remained in a medically induced coma at Victoria General Hospital on Wednesday, according to her mother.

The fundraiser, which was set up by the Torquay Elementary Parent Advisory Council on Dec. 22, has already blown past its $5,000 goal. More than $10,000 had already been donated as of Wednesday afternoon.

Bui's mother told CTV News she was extremely thankful for the outpouring of love and support the family has received since the tragedy took place.

The incident has put a spotlight on the four-way intersection at Ash Road and Torquay Drive. A local community association said it called for traffic lights or stop signs at all four corners before the crash occurred.

The driver of the SUV that struck cooperated with police and no charges have been laid.
