Police recover 2 stolen vehicles on Hwy. 401 in Kingston, Ont. following a single-vehicle crash

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers responding to a single-vehicle crash on Highway 401 in Kingston, Ont. ended up recovering two stolen vehicles from Quebec.

Officers were called to the single-vehicle crash in the westbound lanes of Hwy. 401 near Gardiners Road just after 12:30 a.m. Monday.

“When officers arrived, the vehicle was empty with obvious signs of an injured driver that had walked away from the wreckage,” the OPP said. “It was determined that the vehicle was stolen.”

Officers with the Frontenac OPP, assisted by the Kingston Police Service, conducted a search of the area, but did not locate the driver.

Police say a second stolen vehicle stopped a short distance away along the highway, where the injured driver of the first vehicle was picked up.

“Officers stopped the vehicle and arrested the driver and the passenger, who had cuts and lacerations to his head,” the OPP said.

“A search of the vehicles located a large amount of stolen property and identification belonging to other victims. Wallets, cell phones, clothing and identification were recovered in both vehicles.”

A 27-year-old man form Toronto is facing 17 charges, including two counts of theft of a motor vehicle, operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code, fraud over $5,000 and two counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

A 20-year-old man from Brampton is facing two counts of theft of a motor vehicle and three counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.
