The University of Ottawa Gee-Gees men’s hockey team has punched its ticket to the U Sports final. CTV’s Josh Marano reports.

The University of Ottawa Gee-Gees and their fans are riding high, securing a place in the finals of the 2025 U Sports Men’s Hockey Championships at TD Place.

On Saturday, fans flooded TD place in garnet and grey to watch the Gee-Gees take on the TMU Bold in the semifinals.

It comes after the team knocked off the top seeded and reigning champion University of New Brunswick Reds, 3-2 in overtime earlier this week.

First-year player Mitch Martin opened the scoring for Ottawa on the powerplay.

The game would go back and forth from there, with TMU scoring the next two before the Gee-Gees answered back with a pair of their own to finish the second period up 3-2 in front of a raucous crowd.

TMU would tie the game late in the third period, but it was Martin again with 42 seconds left on the clock beating goaltender Kai Edmonds to win the game 4-3.

After the game, Martin said the tournament being in Ottawa adds something extra for the players.

“We’re not getting tired out there, they’re fueling us,” Martin says when asked about the crowd noise.

“We’re also playing for the alumni, we’re doing it for them to see. A lot of those guys didn’t have the chance to host a national championship, go to Germany and things like that so, we’re battling for them as well.”

This is the first time the Gee-Gees are playing in the national championship.

The finals are set for Sunday at 5 p.m.
