The Ottawa public school board’s new high school in Riverside South could be called Riverside South Secondary School.
A report for the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board recommends trustees approve the new name for the high school on Earl Armstrong Road at Spratt Road. The new Grade 7 to 12 school, offering both English and French Immersion, is scheduled to open in September.
Staff say approximately 35 school names were submitted for consideration, and the school naming committee shortlisted the list to seven names. The final three names considered were Riverside South Secondary School, Algonquin Ridge Secondary School and Grandview River Secondary School.
“Based on the second round of feedback, the School Naming Committee opted for a name that had Algonquin connection to the land as well as connection to the geographical rea of the school location,” says a report for the board.
Staff say the criteria for naming a new school includes being reflective of the school’s unique program focus, make reference to the village, town or community in which the school is located or “pay homage” to a famous Canadian event or achievement.
Staff say the new Riverside South Secondary School will open in September with approximately 699 students in Grade 7 to 10, then add a grade each year over the next two years until it becomes a Grade 7-12 school in September 2027. Students will attend the Riverside South Secondary School from Findlay Creek, Barrhaven South and Riverside South.
