An Oakville, Ont. woman is facing impaired driving and dangerous driving charges after a vehicle crashed into the back of a pickup truck that had been stopped for speeding on Highway 401 in eastern Ontario, according to police.
“This was a dangerously close call for a Quinte West OPP officer and others,” Ontario Provincial Police said on X.
An officer pulled over a pick-up truck for speeding on Highway 401 in Quinte West Saturday afternoon.
“While the officer was speaking to the driver, an unrelated vehicle stopped because the driver wanted to report a suspected impaired driver,” the OPP said.
“Moments later, a vehicle (the one in which the driver was suspected to be impaired) drove into the back of the stopped vehicle, pushing it forward into the initial vehicle stopped by police. The impact pushed the officer into the ditch. Thankfully, there were no serious injuries reported.”

Dash cam photos released by the Ontario Provincial Police showed the stopped pickup truck had been pushed into the median, with a damaged white van and damaged vehicle on the highway.
“This incident also reflects the need for all drivers to slow down and move over when approaching stopped police, other emergency vehicles, or tow trucks, stopped at the side of the road,” the OPP said.
The driver, a 45-year-old woman from Oakville, is charged with operation while impaired – alcohol, operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), and dangerous driving.
Ontario Provincial Police say if you suspect that someone is driving or about to drive impaired, call 9-1-1 to report it, and provide “as much detail about the vehicle and driver as possible.”
