Police in Deep River, Ont., including the Ontario Provincial Police, continue to investigate a stabbing that put the municipality northwest of Ottawa under a shelter-in-place order for most of the day Thursday. An individual was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries following an assault in the area of McElligott Drive at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Residents were told to shelter in place as police searched for a suspect. The order remained in effect into Thursday afternoon. Schools closed for the day and events in the town were cancelled. In a news release on Friday, the OPP said there has been unverified information, images, and video circulating on social media that claimed to identify or describe a suspect. “Police have not identified a suspect and have not confirmed the accuracy of the information being shared online,” the OPP said. The OPP and the Deep River Police Service are asking the public to stop sharing unverified information, photos, or videos related to this incident and to remove any posts they have made. “The spread of unconfirmed information can directly interfere with the investigation, impact witness evidence, and hinder police efforts to identify those responsible,” the OPP said. Police did not provide an update on the victim’s condition on Friday. The investigation remains ongoing, police said.
