This story contains details some may find disturbing.

Some jurors were left in tears Thursday as police body camera footage played in court showed the moment gunshots rang out inside a Bourget, Ont. home in May 2023 that left an Ontario Provincial Police officer dead and two others injured.

Footage from the OPP-issued camera worn by Sgt. Eric Mueller revealed the sound of several rounds of gunfire and officers screaming out in pain and for help.

Mueller died after being shot while responding with other officers to a call for a disturbance and a possible gunshot in the middle of the night at a rural home in the town about 50 km east of downtown Ottawa. Two other officers were shot but survived.

Alain Bellefeuille has been charged with first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.

Bellefeuille’s trial is being held at the courthouse in L’Orignal, Ont. under tight security. He’s pleaded not guilty to the charges and is expected to testify in his own defence.

Const. Marc Lauzon was one of the injured officers and he continued his testimony in French Thursday morning.

He walked the court through what happened as footage from Mueller’s OPP-issued body camera played.

It showed officers arriving on the scene with their vehicle lights flashing. An officer is heard saying he’s “going to do a perimeter check first.” Officers can be seen shining flashlights at the home and loudly knocking on the door.

Mueller was a married father of two young children.

The Crown contents the officers were ambushed once inside.

The defence previously argued Bellefeuille never requested or expected officers to show up in the middle of the night.

Bellefeuille sat in the prisoner’s box in a dark suit with shackles around his ankles.

The trial is expected to last six weeks.
