Ottawa firefighters battled three fires in a 12-hour period Thursday night and Friday morning, including a blaze in an old schoolhouse on Prince of Wales Drive.

The Ottawa Fire Services says it received a 9-1-1 call at 2:43 a.m. Friday, reporting smoke and flames were visible from the attic of a building on Prince of Wales Drive, south of Baseline Road.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, they confirmed the fire in the back of the vacant building.

The fire was declared under control at 4:15 a.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The old schoolhouse is owned by the Hellenic Centre of Ottawa.

At 7:30 p.m. Thursday, firefighters responded to a call for a fire on the top floor of an apartment building on Somerset Street West.

Officials say when firefighters arrived on the scene, flames were visible from the top floor of the high-rise building.

“The fire was extinguished and contained to the area of origin before it could spread,” Ottawa fire said.

No one was hurt in the fire.

The third fire occurred just after 5 p.m. Thursday in a single-family home on Cameron Street in the east end.

Officials say a 9-1-1 caller reported a grease fire in the kitchen that had extended to the cabinets.

Firefighters used a water shuttle system to bring water to the scene because there are no hydrants in the area. The fire was declared under control 40 minutes after the initial call.

The Ottawa Fire Services says firefighters have extinguished nine fires across Ottawa since Monday.
