A driver going 204 km/h and a motorcyclist speeding 182 km/h were among the motorists charged with stunt driving on Ottawa-area highways on Labour Day, according to police. Officers with Ontario Provincial Police and the Ottawa Police Service’s Road Safety Unit and West District Traffic Unit took part in a joint traffic initiative between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Monday. Police issued 46 charges during the six-hour blitz, including six stunt driving charges, and six charges under the Criminal Code of Canada. An Ottawa Police Service Road Safety Unit officer observed a driver going 204 km/h on Highway 7 near Hazeldean Road. The speed limit on Hwy. 7 is 110 km/h. Police say the 23-year-old driver from Ottawa was driving his brother’s Tesla. The driver is facing charges of speeding, Stunt Driving and dangerous operation under the Criminal Code of Canada. OPP Const. Michael Fathi said a motorcyclist was spotted going 182 km/h on Highway 7. “That driver fled from police but was tracked by the OPP plane,” Fathi said, adding the motorcyclist was eventually stopped on Bank Street near Baseline Road. “They also only had an M1 licence and were prohibited from driving on 400 series highways.” The speed limit on Hwy. 7 is 110 km/h. The charge of stunt driving includes an immediate 30-day driving suspension and the vehicle impounded for 14 days. Fathi says another driver is facing impaired driving charges after being involved in a single-vehicle crash. “Those charged with impaired driving receive an automatic 90-day driving suspension and a 7-day vehicle impound,” Fathi said.
