Ontario Provincial Police say a young driver was given several tickets after being pulled over on Highway 417.

Police said the car was initially pulled over because an officer’s automated licence plate recognition (ALPR) system flagged it as being owned by a man whose licence is currently suspended. The driver, however, turned out to be the man’s daughter, who only has a G1 licence.

“This G1 driver thought it was okay to take dad’s car for a spin because she was scheduled to go for her G2 test soon,” the OPP said in a post on X.

In Ontario, a G1 driver is prohibited from driving on 400-series highways with a posted speed limit over 80 km/h unless accompanied by a driving instructor. G1 drivers must also have someone with a valid G-class licence who has at least four years of driving experience in the passenger seat whenever they drive. OPP said the driver in this case did not have a qualified driver in the passenger seat.

Police said the driver’s friend came to pick her up and drive the car back home.
