Ottawa police’s newest dog ‘actually gives hugs’

The Ottawa Police Service has a new member and it’s a two-year-old black labrador.

K9 Nelson, the dog, officially joined the team Monday and will be joining Roxana Manoiu, his handler and a risk navigator with the Victim Services Unit, Ottawa police said in a news release.

“Nelson just completed an intensive week of training in Cambridge with National Service Dogs, where he honed the skills he’ll need to support victims of intimate partner violence,” reads the release.

He will be a valuable resource offering support and comforting those in crisis, police say.

The dog will also sit with victims during risk assessments, officers add.

When Nelson is not working, you’ll find him out and about, as he’ll be visiting police stations with officers.

He’ll be rewarded by activities, including plenty of playtime and outdoor walks.

“His cheerful personality and boundless affection have already made him a beloved companion among the team,” reads the release.

“He is always happy to share a cuddle or a tail-wagging hug—yes, he actually gives hugs!”

Nelson currently lives with his two cat siblings, Abs and Lily. All three are still adjusting to sharing space at their home, police say, adding that he’s been easy to please.

“Treats are a guaranteed way to his heart,” police said.

The new addition to Ottawa police is scheduled to receive his badge officially on May 23 at the upcoming badge ceremony.
