Investigators are searching for the cause of a Tuesday night fire in an abandoned home on Bronson Avenue in Ottawa.

Investigators are searching for the cause of an evening fire in an abandoned home in the Glebe.

The Ottawa Fire Services says it received a 9-1-1 call just after 8 p.m. Tuesday, reporting dark grey smoke coming from the roof of a two-storey home on Bronson Avenue near Highway 417.

Firefighters noticed heavy smoke coming from the upper floor and the roof when they arrived on the scene.

“Firefighters initiated a fast attack and advanced a hose line through the back door of the structure,” Ottawa fire said on X.

“Upon entering the structure, firefighters were met with heavy flames on the main floor. A secondary crew began searching the structure for any occupants. Once the flames were extinguished on the main floor, firefighters made their way to the basement where there was more flames.”

While no occupants were found inside the home, officials say there were “obvious indications of squatters” using the abandoned structure.

The fire was declared under control at 8:51 p.m.

“The boards on the windows were removed so firefighters could ventilate the residual smoke out of the structure,” officials said.

There are no reports of injuries.
