Several residents in South Frontenac Township were left without telephone services for some of the day Wednesday following a copper wire theft from a telecommunication line, according to the Ontario Provincial police (OPP).

Police say in the middle of the night, one or two suspects cut and stole a large amount of copper wire from a line located on Firehall Road, using specialized equipment.

“The wire was completely removed, in a span from one pole to the next pole,” the OPP said in a news release Friday.

The telecommunications company started investigating the incident at 3:49 a.m. when its system stopped working, police say.

The estimated cost of the wire that has been stolen amounts to $5,000, according to police.

Police did not name the company.

Anyone with information about this incident, or who can identify the suspects or their vehicle is asked to call police at 1-888-310-1122, or leave a tip anonymously at crimestoppers.ca.
