A broken fire hydrant caused flooding and road closures in downtown Ottawa on Sunday afternoon.

The Ottawa Police Service closed Gloucester Street between Bay and Lyon streets to traffic at approximately 1:30 p.m. to allow crews to make repairs.

CTV News Ottawa cameras show water also spread to Laurier Avenue, where the bulk of the flooding was.

The City of Ottawa says water service has been restored for residents nearby as of 6:50 p.m.

“Current road closures due to flooding are expected to end later this evening and we appreciate our residents' patience during our crew’s response,” the city said in an emailed statement.

Police are asking the public to avoid the area.
