Ontario Provincial Police have laid multiple charges, including of attempted murder, against a 41-year-old man following a interaction with officers northwest of Kingston, Ont. last month.

OPP officers responded to a disturbance at a home on Lennox and Addington County Road 4 in Stone Mills Township shortly after 5 p.m. on Jan. 17.

Police say the officers attempted to communicate with a man inside the home.

During the interaction, the man exited the residence with an “edged weapon” and two officers deployed an Anti-Riot Weapon Enfield (ARWEN). Another discharged a firearm and struck the man, according to Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

The man was taken to hospital with serious injuries, OPP say. The SIU, the independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police officers, invoked its mandate after the incident.

Following an investigation, the man was arrested Tuesday and charged with four counts of attempt to commit murder and two counts of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.

He was also charged with two weapons-related offences.

The suspect was held in custody and will appear for a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Greater Napanee on Tuesday.

The SIU is conducting a separate investigation into the incident.
