Voters in Ottawa have cast their ballots to elect MPs to represent them in the House of Commons in Canada’s 45th federal election.

The election saw incumbent Liberals hang onto most of their seats, with the riding of Carleton, home to Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre still too close to call as midnight rolled around.

The election saw record turnout in advance polls and an historically long ballot in Carleton, with 91 names, matching a Canadian record.

Thirteen Liberals and five Conservatives have been elected in the region as of midnight.

CTVNewsOttawa.ca provided live updates on the 45th election throughout the day Monday.

5 a.m. Poilievre loses Carleton seat

Liberal Party candidate Bruce Fanjoy has defeated Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre in the riding of Carleton.

As of 4:43 a.m., preliminary results showed Fanjoy winning the riding with 50.6 per cent of the vote. Fanjoy received 42,374 votes, compared to 38,581 votes for Poilievre.

According to Elections Canada, preliminary voter turnout in the Ottawa ridings is 70 per cent

With 255 of 266 polls reporting, Fanjoy leads by 3,062 votes.

It’s not yet know if the Liberals will form a minority or majority government. The party must have 172 seats in the House of Commons to form a majority.

The first results from our region have come in.

In Ottawa South, Liberal incumbent David McGuinty jumped out to an early lead with 1,289 votes over Conservative challenger Blair Turner, wth 284 votes, with one poll reporting.

In Argenteuil-La-Petite Nation, Liberal Stéphane Lauzon is in the lead with 294 votes over Conservative Martin Charron’s 76 with five polls reporting.

In Algonquin-Renfrew-Pembroke, with a single poll reporting, Liberal challenger Cyndi Mills opened with seven votes, compared to 2 for Conservative incumbent Cheryl Gallant.

9:30 p.m.

Polls have closed in Ottawa, eastern Ontario and western Quebec. We expect results to come in quickly in most ridings, but Elections Canada has warned of possible delays in reporting in the riding of Carleton, which has a 91-candidate ballot, thanks to a protest by a group called the “Longest Ballot Committee”, which is protesting the first-past-the-post electoral system.

Direct comparisons to many ridings will be difficult to make tonight because many ridings have had boundaries redrawn, particularly Carleton, Kanata (formerly Kanata-Carleton), and Prescott-Russell-Cumberland (formerly Glengarry-Prescott-Russell), which now includes parts of Ottawa.

All but Drouin and Arya are seeking re-election this year. Drouin chose not to run for re-election in 2025. Arya, who had also challenged the Liberal leadership race, had his nomination withdrawn by the Liberal Party. Liberal Leader Mark Carney is running in the Nepean riding.

There are two-and-a-half hours left to vote in Ottawa.

CTV News Ottawa’s Natalie van Rooy is in the riding of Kanata, formerly known as Kanata-Carleton.

Liberal Jenna Sudds is seeking re-election after first winning the riding in 2021. Sudds is the former Kanata North city councillor in Ottawa and was the Minister of Families, Children and Social Development under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Sudds is facing Conservative Greg Kung, the Green Party’s Jennifer Purdy, the NDP’s Melissa Simon and Moinuddin Siddiqui running for the Centrist Party of Canada.

The riding boundary has been redrawn to transfer the northwestern edge of the riding to Carleton and the western section of the old Ottawa West-Nepean riding moves into Kanata’s boundary. The Kanata riding incudes Kanata and the Kanata technology park.

6:05 p.m.

An Elections Canada official at the distribution centre in Ottawa says there has been a high turnout this election, but Canadians can expect timely results.

“We have to prioritize the accuracy. With higher volumes, that does lead to things being a little bit slower,” spokesperson Matthew McKenna told CTV News Ottawa’s Tyler Fleming. “We do expect Canadians will have the results before they go to bed tonight, even if that might be a bit later.”

5:44 p.m.

It’s quiet at the polling station at Ottawa City Hall in the riding of Ottawa Centre.

CTV’s Katie Griffin is in the riding this election night, where Liberal Yasir Naqvi is running for re-election against a familiar face, the NDP’s Joel Harden, who defeated Naqvi at the provincial level in 2018.

The riding has been represented by a Liberal or a New Democrat since 1979.

5:30 p.m.

There are four hours left to vote in Ottawa. Polls are set to close at 9:30 p.m.

Voters might encounter some lines as people head to the polls after work.

5:00 p.m.

4:50 p.m.

Voters in Ottawa say they’ve had an easy time voting.

Becky, a caller to Newstalk 580 CFRA, said there were some lines at her polling station, but there was no major delay for her.

“It was about a 10-15 minute walk from my house, so it was a beautiful day to get out. And I was grateful to be able to do it. Got into the polling station and there were a number of lines at the other polls, but the poll I had to go to…had no one in it. So from coming in to leaving was about 10 minutes,” she said.

Long lines were reported at some advance polling stations in Ottawa on Good Friday.

3:30 p.m.

The counting of advance votes in the Ottawa riding of Carleton is cleared to begin to ensure “the timely delivery of the results,” according to Elections Canada.

The agency says the counting of ballots cast at advance polls will start six hours before polls close at 9:30 p.m. Extra teams will also be deployed to count the ballots cast at advance polls.

Here is a look at the other adjustments to vote counting in Carleton:

• Election officers have been given additional poll bags and transport bags to store and transport election materials, including ballots.
• Elections Canada says the election officer who counts the ballots does not have to write the name of each candidate on the Envelope: Ballots Cast for a Candidate. “As the votes come in, the election officer will write down the candidate’s name on the envelope and then place the ballots on top of it,” the agency says.
• Election officers will not be required to complete multiple copies of the Copy of Results for Candidates.

This is because the riding’s ballot is much larger than usual, with 91 names on it, part of a protest against the first-past-the-post electoral system by the “Longest Ballot Committee” group.

While counting 100 regular-sized ballots may take 10 minutes, Elections Canada says it will take an estimated 33 minutes to count the larger ballots in Carleton.

Carleton had the highest advance voter turnout in the country, with 43,394 Canadians casting ballots over the Eastern long weekend.

3:10 p.m.

Liberal leader Mark Carney cast his ballot in Ottawa.

Carney voted at St Bartholomew’s Anglican Church, in the Ottawa—Vanier—Gloucester riding.

Carney did not have a seat in the House of Commons when he became prime minister in March.

The Nepean riding, where Carney is running for a seat, was previously represented by Liberal MP Chandra Arya, who was told by the party his nomination to run for re-election was rescinded.

1:59 p.m.

Workers are counting special ballots at Elections Canada’s distribution centre on Coventry Road.

Voting by special ballot allows electors to participate in the electoral process if they are unable to or prefer not to vote at their assigned polling station on election day or advance polling days. Voters who vote by special ballot inlcude Canadians living abroad, members of the Canadian Armed Forces, electors who work in an isolated area of Canada, and students who are living away from home, among others.

“Counting of these special ballots can begin up to 14 days before election day, but the results are not shared until after all polls have closed. We post the preliminary results of these counts on our website on election night, after polls have closed, along with the results of regular ballot counts,” Elections Canada says.

10:30 a.m.

Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre cast his ballot in his Ottawa area riding of Carleton.

The ballot in Carleton is nearly a metre long because there are 91 candidates registered in the riding, Poilievre included.

Important note: Carleton riding

Voters in the riding of Carleton will be choosing a candidate from one of the longest ballots in Canadian history.

A record-tying 91 candidates are on the ballot, as the riding has been targeted by the “Longest Ballot Committee,” which protests the current first-past-the-post electoral system.

The riding includes Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre, who has represented the riding since 2004.

Elections Canada says the ballot is longer than normal, at 97.03 cm.
