Victoria City Council gave the thumbs up Thursday to a $250,000 orca art piece that's made some waves in the community.

The art installation called "Transient Resident" features an orca made up of surfboards placed vertically at varying heights.

It will be installed in the triangular meridian near the Janion Building as part of greenspace surrounding the new Johnson Street Bridge.

The city's policy is to spend up to one per cent of a major public works project on art. The estimated cost for the artwork, $250,000, is just under 0.25 per cent of the $105-million cost for the new bridge.

While some passersby told CTV News earlier this week that the piece didn't seem worth the price tag, some businesses in the area said the thought it might help attract tourism.

Work on the greenspace won't begin until the new Johnson Street Bridge is in place and the old one is demolished.

The new bridge is slated to open in March 2018.
