Two southern Ont. teens face drug charges following northern Ont. traffic stop

Two teens from southern Ontario are charged with drug trafficking and other offences following a traffic stop Wednesday evening on Highway 11 in Powassan, Ont.

Police observed a silver car travelling northbound at a high rate of speed at about 9:15 p.m. the vehicle around 7 p.m. on Highway 69 in French River for speeding.

“The car was travelling approximately 94 kilometers an hour above the posted speed limit,” said Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said in a news release.

“Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop and the vehicle fled.”

A short time later, police located the same vehicle on the North Bay bypass.

“The OPP and North Bay Police Service worked in collaboration to stop the dangerous driver safely and effectively,” reads the release.

Police seized approximately 740 grams of suspected fentanyl and approximately 22 grams of unidentified pills in a subsequent search.

OPP estimated the street value of the drugs seized at $223,000.

As a result of the traffic stop and subsequent investigation, the 19-year-old driver from Pickering, Ont., was charged with stunt driving, dangerous operation of a vehicle, failing to stop for police, flight from a peace officer, driving with cannabis readily available and drug trafficking.

In addition to the stunt driving charge the drivers also received a 30-day driver’s licence suspension and the vehicle involved was impounded for 14 days.

The passenger, also 19 but from Scarborough, Ont., is only facing a drug trafficking charge.

Both accused were held pending bail hearing on Thursday.

None of the accusations has been proven in court.
