A 47-year-old Timmins man is facing 21 charges after a firearm was discharged at a residence in Moosonee, prompting a large-scale police response over the weekend.

Ontario Provincial Police said they responded to a 911 call around 11:15 a.m. on Saturday after a gun was fired into a home on Bert Trapper Drive.

“The suspect fled the scene on an all-terrain vehicle prior to police arrival,” the OPP said in a news release Sunday.

Investigators later identified a residence on Niska Way Street in nearby Moose Factory linked to the suspect. Members of the James Bay detachment contained the area around the residence with assistance from the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service and various other OPP personnel – including canine units, crisis negotiators, and the emergency response team.

Early Sunday morning, at approximately 2 a.m., officers executed a warrant at home in Moose Factory and apprehended the accused.

As a result of the police investigation, the Timmins man faces 21 charges, including discharging a firearm into or at a place in a reckless manner, careless use of firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, criminal harassment, intimidation and possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over $5,000 along with five other weapon offences and eight counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order.

The accused remains in custody pending a bail hearing Sunday.
