Timmins area could get hit with up to 40 cm of snow

Rick Wyman has all the weather details you need to know for northeastern Ontario and what to expect for the next seven days.

A winter storm watch is in effect for the Timmins area, with heavy snow expected beginning Wednesday and lasting until Thursday.

Areas affected include Timmins, Cochrane and Iroquois Falls, Environment Canada said Tuesday.

“Total snowfall amounts of 20 to 40 cm (with) peak snowfall rates of three to five cm per hour,” the weather forecaster said.

Poor visibility in heavy snow and local blowing snow is expected beginning Wednesday and tapering off Thursday afternoon.

“Confidence is increasing that a winter storm will affect portions of northeastern Ontario,” the weather watch said.

“Northerly winds gusting to 50 km/h will result in areas of blowing snow giving reduced visibility. Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations.”

The heavy snow could reduce visibility suddenly and the bad weather conditions may contribute to transportation delays.

“Avoid travel if possible,” Environment Canada said.
