Three people killed in collision on Manitoulin Island

Tragic scene on Manitoulin Island on Thursday with police in Wiikwemkoong saying 3 people were killed when a passenger vehicle collided with an off-road vehicle

Police in Wiiwemkoong say three males were killed Thursday evening when a passenger vehicle collided with an off-road vehicle just after 6 p.m.

Three people riding in the UTV were ejected following the crash, which took place at the intersection of Willow Street and Pontiac Avenue in Wiikwemkoong.

Two were pronounced dead at the scene at the third died later in hospital, Wikwemikong Tribal Police said in a news release Friday.

Police and EMS personnel arrived on the scene “and initiated life-saving measures,” police said.

“The driver of the motor vehicle was treated as a precautionary measure with minor injuries.”

Crisis response teams

To help the families of victims, the Wiikwemkoong Community Crisis Response Team and Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service Crisis Response Team were deployed.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” police said.

“Their names are not being released out of respect for their families at this point in time.”

Wikwemikong police are investigating the tragedy along with the collision reconstruction team from the Ontario Provincial Police Northeast Region.
