Suspended driver from Alberta charged with stunt driving in northern Ont.

Speeding a chromic problem in the north A recent survey confirmed what police in Timmins say they already knew: too many people are speeding in residential areas.

A driver was caught speeding at more than 160 km/h on Highway 17 near Blind River, Ont., Ontario Provincial Police on Thursday.

The incident took place on New Year's Eve around 10:30 p.m. just east of Blind River.

"Police observed a vehicle speeding at an excessively high rate of speed as it approached the town of Algoma Mills," the OPP said in a news release.

"A traffic stop was initiated on Highway 17, between Lauzon Village Road and Highway 538, within the Township of the North Shore."

It emerged that the 39-year-old driver, who is from Cold Lake, Alberta, had a suspended driver's licence as well as "multiple outstanding warrants."

"Assisting with the traffic stop were officers from the East Algoma OPP detachment and the Mississauga First Nation Police Service," police said.

"The driver was arrested and transported to the Blind River detachment for processing. The car was impounded for 45 days."

Charges include driving while prohibited, two counts of failing to comply with a release order, stunt driving and driving while under suspension.

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice bail court in Blind River on Jan. 1 and was remanded into custody.
