Sudbury school buses cancelled Monday after a dozen drivers refuse to drive on messy roads

Sudbury bus routes cancelled at the last minute Families were left scrambling Monday morning when road conditions prompted school bus drivers to cancel their routes.

Hundreds of families across the Sudbury area were left scrambling for alternate transportation Monday morning after more than a dozen bus drivers decided not to head out on their routes.

According to the Sudbury Student Services Consortium, the day started normally, but then about 12 to 15 bus drivers with Voyago Student Transportation decided not to do their respective school bus runs.

The move left the consortium no choice but to cancel those routes at the last minute, along with specific afternoon runs. It impacted at least 200 students.

Consortium executive director Renee Boucher said they were told the drivers made the decision due to poor road conditions.

"They said that once they got to some particular roads, they decided that they couldn’t continue," Boucher said.

Those conditions weren’t just on rural roads.

"Some roads in the middle of town we were having issues with," she said.

"It was a little sporadic. It's not necessarily one particular area that it was cancelled. It was a little bit everywhere."

Boucher called it an isolated incident. There is now an investigation into what happened with the drivers.

But she was hopeful the bus routes would be back to normal Tuesday morning.

CTV News reached out to Voyago Student Transportation for comment, but did not hear back in time for deadline.
