Sudbury police arrest wanted man with $117K in drugs, weapons, cash

Sudbury police officers on bike patrol arrested a man downtown wanted on multiple outstanding warrants finding cash, weapons and an estimated $117,000 in drugs.

Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS) officers with the Community Response Unit arrested an individual on outstanding warrants on Wednesday evening, seizing weapons, drugs and cash.

At approximately 6:00 p.m. on Feb. 5, officers on bike patrol in the downtown area located a wanted individual on Elgin Street, police said in a news release Thursday. Police had information suggesting the individual might be in possession of a firearm, prompting the officers to request additional units before making the arrest.

Shortly after 6:10 p.m., the officers, with the assistance of other units, took the individual into custody.

During a search of the person, authorities found more than $10,500 in cash, a knife and a loaded handgun – the suspect was also found to be wearing a bulletproof vest.

CTV News reached out to Sudbury police for more information on the firearm seized and was advised additional information on the handgun was being held back to protect the integrity of the investigation.

“We do not release information that could impact the integrity of an investigation,” said GSPS spokesperson Kaitlyn Dunn, in an email to CTVNorthernOntario.ca.

“Those specifics (fall) under hold back information relevant to the pending court case and will not be released publicly unless through the court proceedings.”

“Officers then searched the bag the individual was carrying at the time and located 573.4 grams of fentanyl, 234.1 grams of methamphetamine, 468.6 grams of cocaine, 237.6 grams of hashish oil and oxycodone pills,” said police in a news release.

The estimated street value of the seized drugs is $117,000.

As a result, the 36-year-old man has been charged with the following offences:

  • unauthorized possession of a firearm,
  • possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose,
  • possession of prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition,
  • knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm,
  • four counts of possession of firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order
  • three counts of carrying a concealed weapon,
  • careless use of firearm,
  • three counts of possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking and
  • possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000

The accused is being held pending a bail hearing on Feb. 6.
