He was taken into custody around 1 p.m. at the corner of Sharon Avenue and Hawthorne Drive, said CTV News Northern Ontario journalist Alana Everson.

Neighbours told CTV News the man had been hiding in the neighbourhood when he was caught by police.

Earlier in the day, police alerted the public he was loose in the New Sudbury neighbourhood, and that he was wanted “for resisting arrest and assaulting police.”

Police spokesperson Kaitlyn Dunn said the incident began at 11:20 a.m. when a business on Marcus Drive said it had been robbed.

“The individual matching the description provided was located by officers,” Dunn said.

“While attempting to affect the arrest the individual resisted and assaulted police. The individual then fled on foot.”

Ran into a wooded area

Police found him near Gemmell Street, but he ran into a wooded area.

Police initiated a K9 track and asked residents to avoid the area. A neighbour contacted police a short time later and said he was on Hawthorne Drive running through backyards.

He struggled during his arrest and could be heard shouting at police that he wanted his lawyer, Everson said.

The 16-year-old suspect is charged with theft under $5,000, resisting arrest and assaulting police.
