Sudbury NDP MPP Jamie West wins third term

Ontario New Democrat incumbent Jamie West has won his third term as the Member of Provincial Parliament for Sudbury.

With nearly 67,000 registered voters, the Sudbury riding had a voter turnout of 45.10 per cent as of 10:19 p.m. Feb. 27 with 75 of 90 polls reporting.

West received 13,976 votes at the time of publication -- 46.27 per cent of the vote -- a margin of 2,286 over second place finisher Progressive Conservative newcomer Max Massimiliano.

In third place in Sudbury is Ontario Liberal newcomer Rashid Mukhtar Choudhry with 3,125 votes, David Robinson of the Green Party with 709 votes, Brady Legault of the New Blue Party with 395 and independent J. David Popescu with 308.

West was first elected in 2018 and served recently as the deputy Opposition whip, mining critic and labour, training and skills development critic.

He also served as a member of the standing committee on procedure and House affairs until the Ontario Parliament was dissolved on Jan. 28.

West’s victory party

A victory party is being held at Trevi Bar & Grill on Lasalle Boulevard.

“You have no idea what’s going to happen and I had knots in my stomach,” West told Amanda Hicks of CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca in an interview.

“I had people texting me tonight telling me I won, but I kept reminding people the votes hadn’t closed yet.”

The incumbent also said he’s very excited to return to Queen’s Park as “there’s a lot to be done.”

He wore a burgundy suit to his victory party with a white dress shirt and plaid tie.

Hicks said about 30 supporters were in attendance and there was an “upbeat atmosphere” and a live band playing.
