A councillor in Greater Sudbury charged with violating the Municipal Elections Act in the 2022 municipal vote won’t have his case dealt with until after the 2026 election. Ward 11 Coun. Bill Leduc faces nine charges of violating the Act, all connected to finances and fundraising during the election campaign four years ago. Leduc’s case was before a provincial offences judge on Monday, where a pre-trial date of Nov. 27 was set. That’s about a month after the Oct. 26 municipal election. No comment from Leduc Also at the Sept. 21 hearing, his lawyer, Alexandra Logwin asked to be removed as counsel on record for Leduc. Neither Logwin nor Leduc provided a reason. Appearing in person, Leduc said he had “no comment” for local media who spoke to him outside court. However, he did say the case won’t affect his re-election campaign in Ward 11. A representative for Sudbury’s election compliance audit committee also appeared in court via Zoom. Anyone found guilty of violating the Act could be barred from participating in municipal politics for at least four years. They could also face a fine or jail time. In January, Leduc was ordered to pay $63,000 in court costs after he dropped a lawsuit he launched against a private citizen and the City of Greater Sudbury.
