Sudbury-area cooking fire causes more than $200K damage to home

There were no injuries reported after a home on Montcalm Street in the Greater Sudbury community of Azilda sustained heavy damage in a fire last week.

Crews from Azilda, Chelmsford, downtown and New Sudbury along with the platoon chief responded to reports of a structural fire on Aug. 22, according to a social media post by Sudbury Professional Fire Fighters on Friday.

Greater Sudbury deputy fire chief Jesse Oshell told CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca, in a short message, that Greater Sudbury Fire Services received calls about smoke and flames at the location at about 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.

“The fire was started with careless cooking,” said Oshell.

“Upon arrival, smoke and flames were visible,” said the firefighters in their post.

“Firefighters from Azilda and Chelmsford began extinguishing the fire from the exterior.”

The crew from Engine 1 completed searches of the home and performed an interior attack to knock down the fire, according to the post.

“Ladder 1 crew performed roof operations for ventilation and extinguishment,” said the firefighters.

“The ladder truck was set up to apply water from the elevated platform into the vents, windows and areas in the roof where the fire breached.”

The fire crews performed “overhaul” to ensure the blaze was completely out.

“There are no reports of injuries,” said firefighters.

“Unfortunately, the house suffered significant fire and smoke damage.”

Oshell said the damage is “extensive” and estimated at more than $200,000.
