Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate following an incident in Kenora in which one person died after being shot by police. The incident took place in the community March 9 just after 6 p.m. local time. Ontario Provincial Police responded to a disturbance at a residence. “Upon police arrival, communication was attempted with a male armed with an edged weapon,” the OPP said in a news release March 10. “During the interaction, an officer discharged their firearm. The individual was pronounced deceased.” With the SIU taking over the investigation, the OPP will no longer be commenting, the release said. The SIU is expected to issue a statement later Tuesday on its preliminary investigation.
