Two suspects from southern Ontario tried – and failed – to avoid arrest Friday in the Sault by jumping off a balcony.
But the two teenage suspects were arrested anyway during the drug bust, one by the canine unit, the other after landing on the top of a vehicle outside the East Street apartment building.
“Several units descended on the home armed with a search warrant around 3 p.m. Thursday,” Sault police said in a news release Friday.
"Upon entry, two (other) accused were located inside the residence and were arrested.”
Sault police said the two local suspects were ages 39 and 41.
All four accused are charged with several firearms and drug trafficking offences.
"A search of the residence located approximately 238 grams of suspected fentanyl, approximately 16 grams of suspected methamphetamine, packaging materials, weigh scales, a handgun, ammunition, and $1,857.10 in Canadian currency," police said.
"The total estimated street value of drugs seized is $37,474.50."
All four suspects were held in custody pending a bail hearing.
"This investigation has once again revealed that criminals from outside our community are bringing in poison and profiting from the pain of our most vulnerable," Sault Ste. Marie Police Chief Hugh Stevenson is quoted as saying in the release.

"We are committed to using every resource at our disposal to find these drugs, remove them from our streets, and protect the people we serve."
To date, Sault police said they have seized 44 firearms, more than $330,000 in illicit drugs and nearly $74,000 in cash.
