Police have issued a warning after two seniors in Sault Ste. Marie had their wallets stolen in recent distraction thefts.

A Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., man is charged with fraud after being found with a stolen cheque Wednesday, police say.

A complaint about a personal cheque being stolen from a home on Gravelle Street was reported to 911 last week, police said in a news release Thursday.

“It was reported a suspect was attempting to cash the cheque in the 0-100 block of Great Northern Road,” police added.

The 39-year-old man was found with the cheque and is accused of trying to cash it for $2,755 with a forged signature.

He was found March 19 and arrested after police obtained a warrant.

In addition to fraud, he is also charged with attempting to use a forged document and possession of property obtained by crime.

The suspect was released and is scheduled to appear in court May 12.
