Sault Ste. Marie police lay charges in 2023 assault

Sault Ste. Marie saw reductions in many year-over-year crime stats in 2024 – but areas of increased crime show a heavy drug influence.

Assault charges have been laid in Sault Ste. Marie in a 2023 attack that left one person with minor physical injuries, police say.

Several calls were made to 911 on July 22, 2023, reporting an assault on Smale Avenue, Sault Ste. Marie Police Service said in a news release Tuesday.

“An investigation revealed the accused had assaulted someone known to them by striking them with a bag full of heavy objects, pulling their hair, and kicking them,” police said.

Nearly 20 months later, officers located and arrested the suspect.

The 44-year-old man has been charged with assault and assault with the weapon in the incident.

He was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court May 5.
