Date set for murder trial for Sault suspect A 25-year-old Toronto man accused of murder in a stabbing spree in Sault Ste. Marie will go on trial in January 2026.

Dates for a two-month jury trial have been set for a 25-year-old Toronto man accused of second-degree murder and attempted murder in a stabbing spree in Sault Ste. Marie last fall.

In a court hearing Wednesday, the trial of Steven Jones was scheduled to begin Jan. 5, 2026 and last eight weeks.

That marks 28 months after he allegedly killed 22-year-old Taylor Marshall and stabbed a man on the boardwalk .

Liam Frenette was honoured in by Sault Ste. Marie Police Service for his strength and will to live after surviving the stabbing attack while sitting on a bench at the waterfront boardwalk.

The attacks that happened Sept. 7 have been called "random acts of violence" by Sault police Insp. Brent Duguay.

Taylor's body was found in a John Street apartment building, several kilometres away from where a victim was stabbed on the city's waterfront.

Jones has been in police custody since his arrest on the day of the attacks.

None of the charges has been proven in court.
