The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is warning the public about a potential fraud scam involving individuals posing as utility company representatives.
According to police, scammers are contacting residents by phone, claiming to offer free home services and requesting access to their homes. The fraudsters allegedly identify themselves as employees of a utility company to gain trust.

Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and take precautions to protect themselves.
The police service provided the following tips to protect oneself:
- Hang up and call the company directly using the phone number found on your bills
- Never share personal or payment information with unsolicited callers
- Don’t let strangers into your home
Anyone who suspects they have been targeted by this scam is encouraged to report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
