Victim died of gunshot wounds, Sault police say

Police in Sault Ste. Marie are investigating a suspicious death early Friday morning after a victim was found with gunshot wounds.

A 25-year-old victim died of gunshot wounds in Sault Ste. Marie early Friday morning in a case police say involved people known to one another.

Police still are not calling the shooting death a homicide, however, describing it as a “suspicious death.”

The call came in to 911 operators just before midnight Thursday about shots fired in a multi-residential building in the 600 block of Bay Street.

“Upon arrival, officers located a 25-year-old victim who had sustained gunshot wounds,” police said in an update Friday afternoon.

“The victim was transported to hospital and later succumbed to their injuries.”

Detectives are investigating the case “as a suspicious death,” police said.

“As the victim and suspect were known to one another, this is believed to be an isolated incident. The victim’s identity is not being released at this time.”

Increased police presence

Residents should expect to see an increased police presence in the area throughout the weekend. However, the emergency services unit completed their grid search of the area Friday.
