In recent days, police in Sault Ste. Marie charged two people with knife-related offences, including one who was caught stabbing traffic pylons.

The most serious case took place at 2:40 a.m. Feb. 9, when officers responded to a disturbance on Strand Avenue.

“An investigation revealed (that) when the accused was asked to leave the residence, they brandished three knives and walked toward the victim in a threatening manner,” police said in a news release Monday.

“They were arrested. The victim and the accused are known to one another through a third party, who was also present. No physical injuries were reported.”

A 33-year-old suspect was charged with assault with a weapon and failure to comply with a probation order.

They were released on an undertaking with a court date of April 7.

A second knife-related offence took place Feb. 7 around 6 p.m. on McNabb Street.

Police “received a report of someone stabbing traffic pylons with a knife in the 200 block of McNabb Street,” the release said.

“Officers were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, officers located and arrested the accused. A search of the accused located a concealed, prohibited knife.”

Charges include five counts of violating probation, weapons possession, carrying a concealed weapon and carrying a weapon when prohibited.

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
