There was a heavy police presence at a Sault Ste. Marie marina on Wednesday as local and provincial explosives units dealt with disposing of some hazardous waste.
Sault Ste. Marie Police Service received a call from a local business asking for help in disposing of some ether, a police spokesperson told CTV News video journalist Mike McDonald on Thursday.
Members of the Sault police explosive disposal unit enlisted the help of the Ontario Provincial Police urban search and rescue/chemical, biological, nuclear and explosives team and were seen near the Pine Street Marina for several hours on Wednesday.
"The way it works is they have a special trailer that they use and the material will be placed inside of it, sealed, and then the y… essentially blow it up to get rid of the chemical," police spokesperson Lincoln Louttit told CTV News in an interview.
Louttit said the community was given notice of the operation ahead of time to prevent 911 emergency lines from becoming inundated with phone calls about explosions.
"During this process, members of the public will hear several loud noises. The noises will come as a result of safely disposing of the material," police said in a news release Wednesday.
In an update shortly after 11 p.m., Sault police said, "No physical injuries were sustained in the process."
