OPP charge man after fleeing Highway 17 crash

A 42-year-old local man faces multiple charges, including impaired driving and failing to remain at the scene, after a collision on Highway 17 in Sudbury.

Ontario Provincial Police responded to the two-vehicle crash at about 10 p.m. on April 7.

“No injuries were reported,” police said in a news release.

One vehicle fled the scene

One vehicle failed to remain at the scene of the collision and was later located by police.

“The driver of that vehicle was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle, then transported to the OPP detachment for further testing,” said police.

As a result of the investigation, the motorist was charged with failing to remain, dangerous operation of a vehicle and two impaired driving offences – including having a blood alcohol concentration of more than 80.

In addition to the charges, the man’s driver’s licence was automatically suspended for 90 days and the vehicle involved was towed and impounded for seven days.

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear in court May 20.

Remain at the scene

OPP used the incident to remind motorists what to do in the event of a crash – even providing a list of steps for drivers to follow:

• Stop immediately and remain at the scene.
• Check for injuries and call emergency services if required.
• Exchange driver and vehicle information.
• Report the collision to police when required.

“Remaining at the scene is not only a legal requirement, but a responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone involved,” said police.
