“The OPP reminds all snowmobilers to stay safe when riding on frozen lakes and rivers, especially at night. Ice conditions can be unpredictable and dangerous, increasing the risk of accidents, submersion and hypothermia.”
Always check the ice
The OPP reminds snowmobile drivers to always check ice conditions and avoid unknown areas when driving at night.
“Always snowmobile with a friend and let someone know your route and expected return time,” police said.
“A buoyant snowmobile suit and a helmet with a clear visor can save your life in case of an accident.”
Reduce speed when driving at night and carry emergency equipment such as ice picks and a cellphone in a waterproof case.
“Remember: no ice is 100 per cent safe,” police said.
“If in doubt, stay off the ice! Ride smart, ride safe, and make it home safely.”
