Northern teen charged after weapons incident

A 17-year-old from Cochrane, Ont. has been charged by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) following a weapons-related incident last week.

On March 12 at about 2:30 p.m., James Bay OPP officers responded to a report of a weapon threat on Fifteenth Avenue in Cochrane.

Authorities said the suspect allegedly threatened an individual with a weapon.

“The investigation continued with the assistance of the … OPP Critical Incident Commander, OPP Tactical Rescue Unit, OPP Emergency Response Team, OPP Crisis Negotiators, OPP Mobile Support Unit and the OPP Bail Support Team,” said police in a news release.

As a result of the investigation, the teen, whose identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has been charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, uttering threats to cause bodily harm, failing to comply with a release order and two counts of failing to comply with a sentence.

No further details were released by police.

The accused was held in custody pending a court appearance on Friday.
